A spunky little male ruby-throated hummingbird, perched at the top a shepherd's hook, where he defends his territory (a sugar-water feeder) from other birds. Hummingbirds are the only species that can hover, and fly backwards, or even upside down. But they cannot walk or hop. Their legs are short and weak, and they can only shuffle from side to side.
